BRESSANONE (NORTHERN ITALY)

Project for a shopping mall
Architect: Professor Othmar Barth
November 1982 - March 1983

Bressanone is a small town in the Alto Adige region in the north of Italy. Part of the South Tyrol, formerly Austrian, it has preserved its germanic touch. The town centre, medieval, is characterised by towers, reaching upwards like hands stretched towards the summits of the surrounding Dolomites.

The project occupied a small town block between the old town gate (and its tower) and a large, exterior parking lot. The intention was to design a diagonal gallery crossing the building, around an interior square, and lit with mountain light coming from openings in the upper floors.
